As you're well aware, marestail continues to be a significant problem across much of the county, and while not yet found in Fairfield County, palmer maranth has the potential to be an even greater problem. While the introduction of Xtend soybeans may be making both these weeds easier to handle, to say the least, the management of the dicamba applications that go along with Xtend beans will continue to be complicated. OSU weed specialist Mark Loux will address all these concerns during his presentation.
Along with new weed control options, there's also a lot of research in recent years that address optimum seeding populations and row widths for soybeans. The same is true for wheat as we are seeing a modest shift to 15 inch row wheat. OSU soybean and small grains specialist Laura Lindsey has directed most of the research on these issues in Ohio and will discuss the results during Agronomy Day.
Economics will not be overlooked on the 16th. OSU Extension economist Barry Ward will be present to examine the Ohio farm economy, especially as it relates to land rent and the cost of other farm inputs. Perhaps by then Ward may also have some thoughts on how passage of a new Federal Tax Bill will impact farm returns.
