Extension is the Educational Outreach component of The Ohio State University. A county office is located in all of Ohio's 88 counties. Extension provides educational opportunities for residents of Ohio. There are four main program areas in Extension: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Community Economic Development, Family Consumer Sciences, and 4-H Youth Development. The Agriculture and Natural Resources program offers a wide variety of information to farmers, agri-businesses, horticulturalists, and homeowners in Fairfield County. Farmers and agri-businesses receive information on the latest crop and livestock production techniques, marketing insights, and on-farm demonstrations. Recommendations are provided for lawn care, landscaping, soil fertility, and plant selection for local horticulturalists and homeowners. Educational opportunities are presented in meetings, newsletters, home/farm visits, and individual consultation. The Community Economic Development program facilitates county economic development efforts including community preparedness and involvement, interaction among governmental agencies on economic development issues, business retention and expansion, maintaining and distributing information on the county's incentive programs, grant procurement and recapture of tax dollars, and serves as an information resources. The Family and Consumer Sciences program reaches families of all ages and income levels. From parenting to home care to nutrition to money management to household hazardous waste to leadership development. Extension teaches skills that families can use everyday. The 4-H program teaches life skills through hands-on learning. Youth age, 5 -19, can develop leadership, communication, decision making, citizenship, and social skills through a variety of activities. Extension disseminates information in many ways. We have many publications and fact sheets covering a wide array of topics that can be obtained at our office or on the internet. Also, Extension sponsors many programs and meetings that can be attended by the general public. These programs come in the form of daytime and evening meetings, field days, and educational tours. Lastly, much of our education is done via telephone conversations. We answer many questions over the telephone relating to agriculture, horticulture, food safety, family and consumer sciences, parenting, 4-H, and economic development.
